"We had a lovely stay at The Royal Oak. Our own key to come and go. The rooms were lovely. A bit dated decor if you want modern however it was exceptionally clean with plenty of extra bedding towels toiletries and modern coffee machine as well as traditional kettle. The bed was so comfy that I slept the best in a long time. I would recommend it. Our friends stayed nearby and paid four x what we paid and wasn't worth it. We all said we would stay in The Royal next time."

Tip:
"Great Italian a couple of doors up in the square for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Don't pay over the odds. Helmsley has the same for everyone regardless of how much you pay for your bed."

"very comfortable stay overnight on our way to Whitby. Food was good, although my partner had to send the seasonal veg back as it was cold. Otherwise, very tasty and the breakfast was excellent"
