The location overlooking Stromness harbour was very nice, the room was large, as was the bed, and everything was very clean. The breakfast was delicious and varied and our host was very flexible with the breakfast time as we had to catch an early ferry on the Thursday.

Highly recommend this B&B and make sure you visit Hamnavoe and Adams Place in Stromness for a meal. Both are vary good.

Lovely views, especially from the breakfast room. Comfy bed and terrific shower facilities, delicious breakfasts, nice sitting area, though without a desk. One could certainly work/write/read in the sun room/breakfast room. Otherwise ready for a home-style stay with hosts in the living room downstairs enjoying a normal evening at home. Very sweet to come back from a day of adventure and see that home-like silhouette ahead. Easy walking to and from the port and eateries of Stromness. Very handy mini-newsletter told us key info on tides (some sites inaccessible in high tides) and cruise ship arrivals

In Stromness the Ferry Inn is not to be missed, food-wise, but all over the island are the most wonderful eateries with terrific local seafood and meats. Foveran, Lynnfield and Merkister are standouts. For shopping and history Kirkwall is a bonanza, but following the Creative Trails to visit artisans at work is a treat, too. We rented a car and explored from Cleat to Birsay and loved every corner of the place. Hiked beautiful Mull Head. Took the ferry to Lyness for the very fine new Skapa Flow Museum and explored on foot, but a car would have been VERY handy to see more of the island and get to the Observation Station, but we walked up there nonetheless for an amazing view. Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and Maeshowe all fascinating. Loved our tour of Highland Park Distillery, as well. Getting here and away can be a challenge (be sure to snag a taxi at Thurso to get to the ferry at Scrabster, and watch for flight delays between Kirkwall and Edinburgh) but sooooooo worth it.

Joy is a thoughtful and gracious host who made our visit to Orkney even more memorable. Our family stayed in 2 rooms for 3 nights. The view from our rooms and the breakfast room was stunning-overlooking Stromness harbor. The rooms were beautifully appointed and the en suite bathrooms were modern and similarly thoughtfully designed. We had never before seen showers that could be regulated from inside or out of the stall but would love to install these in our own home. Most importantly from our perspective the beds were large and very comfortable. Joy’s breakfasts were excellent -porridge made from grain ground at the Barony water mill, eggs from their own chickens, and a choice of full Scottish or lovely continental breakfast (try the salmon). Arrayed around the breakfast room are numerous reference books and maps that guests are free to borrow. I can’t think of anything lacking. 5 stars!

Having a car is a must on Orkney. Guided ranger talks at the Neolithic sites (Joy has a schedule on the table for you). Tour of the Barony grist Mill in Birsay with Alistair the miller. Dinner at the Foveran in St. Ola (for the view and the cuisine). Of course Scara Brae-but that’s a given. We happened to visit during the annual county show-that was loads of fun to experience. If you ever have a chance to attend a county show on the islands or Highlands where The Drakes of Hazard are performing -make sure to see it. Mark Wylie and his trained ducks (the Drakes) and border collies are hysterical. And just hike, bike or drive all over Orkney.
