We spent our entire week in Buttermere enjoying the comfort of our apartment, venturing out in our walking gear when weather conditions permitted. We brought with us all our provisions for breakfast and lunches, which was fortunate as there are no grocery stores within Buttermere. We really enjoyed our evenings in the hotel’s walkers bar, which served fine home cooked food along with an excellent wine list (and, of course, the usual local ales). Experienced walkers must remember to take their ‘Wainwright Pictorial Guides to Lakeland Fells’ and a jigsaw or two for if and when the wet weather passes through!

We love coming to the Bridge self catering accommodation. The location is stunning and conveniently located near a range of hiking routes. The apartment is always spotless, cosy and welcoming. After a long hike, sinking into a hot bath in the deep tub and then eating in the apartment or going to the pub for a huge meal (vegan options are on point!) and curling up with a whiskey in the peaceful lounge before flopping into the comfy bed is just perfect. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming. We can't fault The Bridge and every time we visit we never want to leave.

You're spoiled for walking options, regardless of ability level. Using an app like Alltrails is really invaluable if you don't want to carry maps around or need help selecting a suitable route. Plan for bad weather - lots of spare clothes and waterproofs, and make a plan B in case the weather is too bad for hiking. We went to the Lake District Wildlife Park and I cannot recommend it enough - really good value for money for the number of animals you see, we spent 5 hours there (it's still outdoors so dress accordingly). The farm shop next to The Bridge does beautiful vegan pies.
