This was the second time we stayed at Smiddy Cottage and it was every bit as enjoyable this time round. The cottage was clean and fully equipped and it had everything to make our stay comfortable and relaxing - including the hot tub! There was plenty of safe space for our dog to roam around the garden and the pond with the ducks is an added bonus. The provision of towels and robes for the hot tub was great and we also enjoyed use of the BBQ. The honesty shop was a new addition since our last stay and we bought locally sourced meat and coals for the BBQ and also a variety of sweet treats. We didn’t want to leave after our weeks stay and I am certain that we may well return.

As there are very few shops close at hand we made an online order for delivery from a supermarket. This worked well for us but please ensure you state which cottage you are staying in as we did have a driver from another supermarket knock on our door who had a delivery but the customer had not stated which cottage they were staying in. We visited the chair lifts at Glenshee ski centre and had a lot of fun taking the chair lifts to the top. We loved exploring the mountains the various footpaths and routes along rivers and waterfalls. We took a dog and did some of the recommended walks in the guide provided by the cottage - they were all spot on - especially the ones that included forests. We had a lovely visit to Braemar - lovely shops and walking along the river. If you plan to visit Balmoral Castke be sure to check if it is open as it is closed to visitors for significant portions of Au and Sept and we were therefore unable to visit.

We booked a last minute night away on the morning of, we stayed in the Shepherds Hut, the location was fantastic, looking over the duck pond. We even bought duck feed from the Honesty Box - this was a lovely touch. The hut was outstandingly clean, with great touches like the board games and Scottish tablet. We will definitely be back here to try out one of the treehouses.

Bring binoculars for watching birds and the views. Braemar and Ballater are both lovely and worth a visit. Balmoral estate has lovely gardens and walks.

Glenshee Cafe and Gift shop / Visitor center is a nice place, friendly people and good food. And the hike from Spittal of Glenshee into the glen taitneach is fenomenal.
