We have stayed in many self-catering accommodations around the UK -- Hariheim has certainly been the best. The lodge is just 3 minutes away by car to Kirkwall town centre, though we preferred the pleasant 25 minute walk down the road to the quaint town centre with its outstanding cathedral and museum. The lodge itself was spacious and very well set up; beds comfortable and spacious, kitchen spick and span and bathroom clean and modern. Kenny, the owner, was outstanding in his attentiveness, providing the essentials for when we arrived (tea, coffee, sugar and milk) as well as some extras such as lovely Orkney cheese and oatcakes. He was also super attentive to anything we might need help with, though never intrusive. This is certainly one of the best places to stay in all of Orkney and indeed made our visit all the more wonderful.

Highly recommend is the restaurant at the nearby Lynnfield Hotel. Superb fish meals depending on what is coming in fresh. We had excellent plaice as well as monkfish. Beautiful scallops too. Importantly, also has a dog friendly area.

First class communication with the owners from booking to arrival. Basic essentials provided such as milk, tea, coffee, and a small goodie pack meaning the holiday could start as soon as we arrived. We have used this home from home for 4 years now and love the friendliness of the owners, the ease they provide you with from booking to departure and all the little touches around the accomodation. Would highly recommend.

The accomodation is a short car trip or 20 minute walk to Kirkwall town centre. It is conveniently located and we use this as a base to explore the whole of the mainland and isles. Kirkwall is the capital of Orkney and has lovely restaurants, takeaways and bus services for those who are travelling without cars. Orkney has so much to see and do and the accomodation allows you the ability to do so without the restriction of meal times or inconvenience of returning at set times. The area is peaceful and relaxing with a beautiful beach at Scapa.

This was our third time staying at what could only be described as a home from home. The accommodation is comfortable, clean and has everything you need from crockery to toilet roll. A wee welcome basket provided means you can have a wee nibble and drink as you unpack. The location is convenient with Kirkwall town 20 minute walk or 5 minutes in the car. Owners are pleasant and on this occasion there was the risk of our ferry being cancelled on our departure day. When we contacted them they advised, if needed we could book and extra night, this saved us from having the nightmare of looking for alternatives. Thankfully the sailing went ahead. We love the lodge, the location and the hospitality shown to us by the owners and hope to return soon.

The location of the accommodation is convenient to explore the whole of the mainland and also harbours for ferries to the islands. Depending on interests or group, there is something for everyone. Kirkwall has a leisure centre for those with families, the island is teeming with wartime history and museums. Archeology is on almost every area with some sites needing to be pre booked, such as Maeshowe. Kirkwall is the capital and most of the bigger stores are situated here with shops for every budget. This year we ventured to Hoy, walking from Rawick Bay to the old man, a must for those who are fit and a challenging walk for the not so, but the views are worth it. Regardless of what you do or see, there will always be something for everyone.

Harihiem was really lovely. Couldn't fault it. Centrally positioned within Orkney, so ideal for visiting all areas. Kenny and Anna were very hospitable and welcoming. We can't wait to return. I have been visiting Orkney my whole life due to family roots, and Harihiem is definitely top of my list of places to stay.

If you like a wee dram, then Highland Park Distillery is right next door. Yesnaby for walks along the cliffs, Ring of Brodgar, The Churchill Barriers, Italian Chapel, St Magnus Cathedral. We were even lucky enough to see a large pod of Dolphins at the first Churchill Barrier this visit. Not forgetting Kirkwall City Pipe Band parades.
