Dave, myself and Bru (the wonder dog) have visited the Cairngorms Bothies before and wanted to return in the winter to enjoy the spectacular scenery under a blanket of snow. This time we were lucky enough to get the Woodcutters Lodge, part of the Cairngorm Lodges just up the road from the bothies. We were welcomed by the owner who had started the log stove, and given a brief tour of the cabin before being left to our own devices. The cabin was instantly warm and cozy, the kitchen small but perfectly functional, the beds comfortable and warm, and an immaculate bathroom. Three days of relaxing, warm, perfection. A beautiful forest walk, and short trip to the village of Logie Coldstone. All under a couple of inches of fresh snow. Visually stunning, welcoming, relaxing - we had plans to go further afield but were more than happy to stay within walking distance and enjoy thoroughly the peace, quiet, wildlife and (at night) an infinite starfield. Utterly spectacular. Definitely will return to both the lodges and the bothies, with friends as it’s such a tonic for the body and soul. There is skiing, hiking, wildlife, etc locally - if you want that but also equally good to stay put, enjoy the immediate surrounds with good food, wine and company. Cannot recommend highly enough.

We had a fantastic stay over the new year. The bothies are in a lovely location. So nice to switch off from the world for a week. The Cabin was all set up with the fire going for when we arrived. Hosts were amazing. Snow had been forecast and when we arrived back on one of the days there was a lovely little care package that had been left for us with all the essentials to help with the cold spell even though once the log.burner was going it was nice and toasty in there. We will definitely be back in the future.

Tips for other travellers
Lovely walks straight from your front door. Plenty of walks nearby. Balmoral castle is worth a visit and there is a lovely little bakery nearby 'the highlander bakehouse'. The focaccia breads and the choc & hazelnut swirls were amazing. Prince Albert's pyramid is worth a walk up to. There's a bit of a climb to get there but 100% worth it. So much to see and do in the area.

The bothy is really lovely and the location is beautiful! Extremely welcoming hosts and ready to help at any time. Our spaniel couldn’t get enough of all the sticks and digging opportunities around us! Thank you!

We got a coffee and a pastry from the Spider on a bicycle, and went for dinner at the Boat Inn. Both excellent and dog friendly, with good parking around them.
