A charming place with a great host. This is the owner’s first season and, I think because of this, it’s not slick hospitality delivery. But it’s the better for it. We loved the setting and our room overlooking the lovely garden and river. Good luck with the rest of the season, hopefully we’ll return soon.

Grasmere and Ambleside are both east walking distance so the less avid hikers can still get out and about and enjoy the surroundings. It’s on a bus route so other places further out are also very accessible.

We had a lovely stay at Rydal Lodge - there was a warm welcome; despite arriving a little late. We slept soundly in a comfortable bed, enjoyed delicious breakfasts and the host was great!

The location right on the river and at the doorstep of stunning hikes in all directions was phenomenal! Ian was great- keen to meet our every need. The old-fashioned quirkiness of the lodge was charming...and also a little annoying (low cieling in the shower, nowhere to hang your towel or place your toiletries next to the sink in the bathroom, mediocre bed comfort, etc.). Overall, though, it was wonderful! The garden has plenty of chairs and tables that look out to the river, where you can watch ducks play and sheep graze after a good hike. Lovely!

Ambleside is a 30 minute walk or a 3 minute drive away- plenty of lovely restaurants and shops to explore. The church across the street is lovely, and the parishioners were incredibly welcoming and kind- inviting us to tea after services! The Horseshoe trail (over 11 miles) was stunning, as was the lakeside trail. We loved being able to leave the car at the lodge and hike anywhere we liked- high or low! I could go on- overall a lovely stay. Would definitely recommend!
